Collaboration, Growth and Resilience

by Melat Terefe, Founder and Creative Director, Dolmel
Reflecting on my journey with AGYLE, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for the experiences, connections, and insights gained during this transformative week in Berlin. From forging meaningful relationships to overcoming challenges as an entrepreneur, AGYLE has left a profound impact on both my personal and professional life.
AGYLE Collaborations: Building Connections That Last
One of the most rewarding aspects of AGYLE has been the genuine connections I’ve made with fellow leaders. These are relationships that, while not immediately collaborative, hold incredible potential for the future. As we navigate the unique challenges of leadership in our respective fields, our shared passion and drive create a bond that will undoubtedly lead to impactful projects and partnerships. AGYLE has taught me that collaboration isn’t always about immediate results; it’s about nurturing relationships that can thrive over time. This understanding inspires me to keep these connections alive, knowing that our collective vision for change will one day align to make a significant impact.
Professional Achievement: Milestones Worth Celebrating
This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions and growth. One of my proudest milestones has been participating in Africa’s largest textile and fashion trade show, where I had the honor of showcasing DolMel’s journey. Representing my brand on such a prestigious platform, engaging in panel discussions, and sharing my passion for sustainable and culturally significant fashion was an unforgettable experience. AGYLE was another transformative milestone, offering a unique space to share my vision and gain global visibility. The response from audiences reaffirmed DolMel’s role in shaping the future of African fashion, and for that, I am deeply humbled.
Facing Challenges: Resilience Amidst Adversity
As an entrepreneur in Ethiopia’s complex business ecosystem, challenges are a constant companion. From navigating policies that are not designed for innovation to addressing the environmental impact of the textile industry, every day demands perseverance. Yet, these challenges are also opportunities to grow, innovate, and inspire. AGYLE has reinforced my belief in resilience, the courage to face obstacles head-on, and the determination to create meaningful impacts despite them. This mindset drives me forward, reminding me that the story doesn’t end when challenges arise; it evolves through persistence and grit.
Reunions and Recommendations: Continuing the AGYLE Journey
I eagerly look forward to reconnecting with my fellow AGYLERS (The BUS is Leaving 😃 😉 ) to share our progress and learn how we’ve each grown since our transformative week together. Hearing their stories, witnessing their evolution, and celebrating their successes will be a powerful reminder of the incredible network we are building. Together, we are rewriting the narrative of leadership, innovation, and collaboration in Africa and beyond.
What would you like others in the network to take away from your story?
What I hope others take away from my story is that I hope my story encourages others to embrace their unique journeys, remain open to learning, and actively contribute to building a supportive, transformative community consistently. I believe we can inspire each other and shape a brighter future for our industries and beyond. If I have to point out a few key takeaways, it would be inspiration to persevere, the power of relationships, the importance of storytelling and to lead with purpose that has some sort of meaning.
As a call to action to my fellow AGYLERS whether through joint projects, knowledge-sharing, or simply cheering each other on, our collective strength lies in our shared passion to make a difference. I encourage all of us to stay connected, keep the conversations alive, and explore ways to bring our visions together for greater impact.
Do you have any additional thoughts, feedback, or suggestions for the alumni network?
AGYLE has been more than an event, it has been a catalyst for growth, collaboration, and resilience. It has reinforced my belief in the power of community and the importance of sharing our stories to inspire and create change. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned, the connections made, and the hope for a future where our collective efforts transform not only our respective industries but also the world. To my AGYLE family, thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s continue to inspire, collaborate, and lead with purpose.
